George Crotty Trio

Canadian bandleader and instrumentalist George Crotty has carved out a unique niche in the contemporary music world by reimagining the role of the cello in modern music. Crotty's vibrant compositions expand the instrument's boundaries to encompass moody jazz, ecstatic Hindustani ragas, and emotionally charged Arabic maqam. Crotty's Trio (GC3), featuring John Murchison on bass and Jeremy Smith on percussion, recently released their fourth album, 2025's Heart Music. The new LP is an accessible, cinematic, and daringly transatlantic narrative that foregrounds the combo's clever cross-cultural interplay while emphasizing groove, melody, and texture over bombast.

To quote Whole Note Magazine, “...the music certainly plays like a showcase of the cello’s capabilities...Crotty’s virtuosity and melodicism undeniably take center stage...” About their 2022 release, “Chronotope”, All About Jazz wrote: “Crotty excels at blending various elements into a unique musical brew. On Chronotope, a cross-cultural mix of South American, Arabic, Indian, and contemporary jazz idioms amount to a stream of genre- blurring invention.”

The GC3 has toured throughout Europe and North and South America, and has performed at the 21C Festival - where they supported Laurie Anderson, the Small World Music Festival, Copenhagen Vinterjazz Festival, and the New Directions Cello Festival.
